Today is the exam day for the undergraduates, so there didn’t have many people in the institute. Therefore, my work today is arranging the institute’s official account on WeChat. The rest of my time I can use to read some psychology articles which I am interested. I had experience of arranging WeChat official account during my last independent study in last winter. The essential factors of an official account are readers comments, visitor volume, and article updates. It is important to answer readers comments timely. By answering reader comments, the account is able to gain readers because the reader may feel included. Data of visitor volume can increase attention to the changes of interests. If visitors highly increases, then it would be better to post more related topics. If visitors decreases, the group needs to explore some more interesting topics to raise the number of visitors. Last but not least, constant updates are the most important factor to be a professional account. For the official account of the institute, I need to be aware of one more thing which is the online submission. I am not professional enough to select submission. My work is to make a list of titles and authors. Then I need to put the documents into folders and rename the folders as a special format ([title] author).
While I was reading psychology articles in the afternoon, I found an interesting topic which talks about vegetarian diets lead to depressive symptoms.
The article states that vegetarian diets normally point to health benefit like cardiovascular. It tries to determine the connections between significant depressive symptoms in men and vegetarian dietary habits. Through the experience, the data includes 9668 male shows that non-vegetarians have lower depression scores than vegetarians. The conclusion suggests that nutritional deficiencies may explain the reasons. Resource: Hibbeln, J. R., Northstone, K., Evans, J., & Golding, J. (2017). Today I went to Tianjin Normal University to learn how to use the biopac which is a physiological instrument. Most of the previous data collected by Ms. Li’s group used this instrument. Therefore, it is really important to know the procedure of the biopic systems.
Learn the complicated procedure of a professional instrument is a challenge for me today, but I enjoyed the process of gaining new knowledge. Data collection is the most important step of a experiment. Meanwhile, it is a fallible step. A good original data can help the whole experiment to be a lot more efficient. Scientific research is always rigorous and not easy. Anyone need to be cautious but courages to complete an experiment.
If you want to learn more information about biopac... Biopac systems official website: https://www.biopac.com Today is the first day of my independent study. My independent study is mainly about realizing more of psychology while helping analyze the statistics of the experimental results. My sponsor, Ms. Li, is a master who graduated from Peking University and is finishing her Ph.D. degree now. During my independent study, I will work with her in Peking University School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences. This psychology institute is one of the top-ranked schools in China. I’m looking forward to exploring the real field of psychology. I met Ms. Li at the front door in the morning. We walked in the campus. Ms. Li introduced me to her teachers, colleagues, and classmates. They all studied psychology for more than four years. I am really excited for my future study. Then, Ms. Li told me my work for today. Because today is the first day, so my main goal is acquainting new places, people, and trying to know the specific theory of psychology. 1. Get to know Peking University School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences by reading information on the website, especially look at the scientific research and recent reports 2. Briefly Read “Psychology and Life” 3. Briefly Read “Physiological Psychology” 4. Briefly Read “Developmental Psychology” 5. Help Ms. He (Ms. Li’s colleague) with new data from the experiments if she needs 6. If I time to rest I can observe the experiment in the lab Peking University School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences website: http://www.psy.pku.edu.cn/index.htm
Though reading three professional psychology books and expert report from the website, I understand that statistic and psychology s inseparable. In order to be a psychologist, anyone has to build up a strong statistic background to support the psychology theory. I was really interested in “Development Across the Life Span” among the three books I briefly read. It talks about how and why human minds chance by growing up. This context is closely connected to the topic I am interested which is chidden psychology. Reports from PKU website: Today was a nice start. I got on really well with everyone and learned a lot from my reading. By the check in at the end of the day, I knew that we will go to Tianjin University to learn to use biopac, a kind of physiological instrument for data collection. I am more excited for the next day.
